American music has been characterized by many hit songs known worldwide and especially in South America. Here are some of the well-known artists in the South American music industry.
Julieta Rada
This is one of the hottest artists in the Latin American dance music scene right now. Rada’s style of music leans more on the pop side, with many describing her as a modern-day Janet Jackson. She has received a nomination at the Latin Grammys as the most promising new act in the last half-decade.
Rada, an Uruguayan, is a case of the apple falling close to the tree. Her father Ruben Rada was an equally celebrated singer in Uruguay, and a great percussionist too!
Shakira
Colombian Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, who was born in 1977, is a famous songwriter and singer. She has been prominent in the music business since 1988, majoring in the pop genre. Shakira is famous for singing the 2010 FIFA World Cup official song ‘Waka Waka’ which is the best selling World Cup anthem. She also has several music albums such as ‘Live from Paris’ and ‘Oral Fixation Volume 2’ among many others.
Kali Uchis
Kali was born in Colombia and grew up in the US, and has shown just as much versatility in her music. She swings from soul to RnB, but a dance track is never far from her compositions. Her albums come hard and fast since she released Por Vida, meaning ‘For Life’ and she works with big names like Snoop Dogg and Diplo.
Tei Shi
Tei Shi is also a product of a cocktail of cultures. She has a Polish-Jewish ancestry and has lived in Colombia, Canada, and Argentina in her formative years. The result of this is clear in her electronica music that fuses languages and styles from the places she has been.
Zuzuka Poderosa
‘Miss Energy’ would be a perfect term to describe this Brazilian heartthrob. She oozes energy in both her videos and live performances. She is also celebrated for feminism campaigns, especially with her track ‘Pussy Control’ which happened around the time of the famous women’s marches.
Roberto Carlos
Roberto Carlos was born in 1941. He combines the art of singing and songwriting, making him one of the best artists from Brazil. His music falls in the different genres of rock and roll, bossa nova and rhythm and blues. He has been in the industry since 1951. He has music albums which sell well worldwide. Some of his songs include “Chegaste” and “Camionero” among others.
